In October 1964 an article was published titled 'Jobshop planning', describing a rather simple but effective manual system. From that time onwards quite a number of WORKSHOPS within Philips have adopted production control systems base on these principles. The jobshops meant here manufacture spare parts, complete machinery and fine mechanical tools in small series, or single items on customer orders; 40 to 150 craftsmen were employed in each of them. What we wanted to achieve was short and reliable delivery times and a high utilization of production capacity. In ten of these jobshops, operating the system for periods of on to four years, the performances were inventorized. However, the fair results achieved seemed to be in contradiction to theoretical studies made at the same time. Therefore in addition to the survey an investigation was made as to why these differences occurred. Since that time many equivalent control systems and methods of reorganizing production capacity have been developed for the same purpose. Some of them are described more or less globally Also computerized systems have been introduced. One of them, called WASP, was selected as a comparable and cheap alternative for manual 'jobshop planning'. Six of the jobshops which had chosen WASP were questioned on the same subject. Competence is central to vascular access care

The author reflects on competence in nursing and vascular access care. She suggests that in 2014 there is a great amount of evidence which is available to inform nursing practice as it relates to nursing competence. She argues that despite access to evidence, there is poor adherence to guidelines on vascular access care, and as a result, the National Infusion and Vascular Access Society (NIVAS) published a set of central venous access device competencies in November of 2013.

A mindfulness approach to antenatal preparation

This article describes a small exploratory workshop undertaken to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of using a mindfulness-based approach to antenatal childbirth education. Good mental health and well-being, and not simply the absence of mental illness, have been shown to result in health, social and economic benefits for individuals, communities and populations (Department of Health, 2011). Mindfulness practices are increasingly being used as a way of managing pain, reducing stress and anxiety and have the potential to help parents preparing for childbirth to reduce the risk of postpartum depression and increase 'availability' of attention for their baby. As mindfulness practices help participants to see more clearly the patterns of the mind, it helps both to halt the escalation of negative thinking that might compound pain or depressed mood, and deals with the tendency to be on autopilot. This small pilot workshop received a remarkably positive response and showed that the training was acceptable to couples and midwives in the UK context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
