BCOVS and AVA Abstracts 2002: Defective Vision

This article presents abstracts related to vision science published in the November 2002 issue of the journal "Opthalmic and Physiological Optics." Children with Down syndrome have reduced behavioral visual acuity. This may reflect sensory deficits, or a loss of performance in later mechanisms responsible for behavioral responses. This study compared acuity measured using visual-evoked potentials (VEP), with behavioral tests in children with down syndrome. The goal was to determine whether reduced visual acuity could be detected in VEP recordings from the first stages of the response pathway.

A discursive turn: Rhizovocality as re-iteration of voice

Through her mapping of the historical, political, and cultural reconfigurations, irruptions, of voice within feminist emancipatory research, the author of the article "Rhizovocality," published in the September 2003 issue of the journal "Qualitative Studies in Education," successfully interrogates then completely troubles the concept of voice. In doing so, she clearly articulates the dangers involved in allowing meaning of the signifier voice in feminist emancipatory research to become cemented, final. To do so would be to ignore the multitudinous ways, both subtle and obvious, in which the discursive power embedded in such a signifier is hegemonic.
