This article discusses the application of thumbing technique by ORGANISTS. According to the author, late 19th century ORGANISTS employed the technique, especially in transcriptions. He claims that none was more proficient than English organist Edwin H. Lemare. The author advises that the best way to practice thumbing is to play a descending C-major scale with the right hand, playing the next note with the tip of the thumb and immediately substituting the first joint.
