The USSR was dominated by its ruling Communist Party, and the party was in turn dominated by a political elite that was represented in its Central Committee. Nearly two thousand individuals were members of the Central Committee between 1917 and 1991, who may be divided into four distinct political generations from the professional revolutionaries born in the late nineteenth century to the post‐war generation that was beginning to enter the political elite in the Gorbachev years. There were considerable variations over time in the characteristics of the Central Committee, including the extent to which its membership was replaced at successive party congresses. But a close relationship developed between particular occupational positions and Central Committee membership, a ‘job‐slot’ system that lasted until the final years of communist rule. The Central Committee as an institution was generally marginal to the political process. But it met more frequently and took more decisions in the 1920s and late 1980s, and on several occasions, its meetings were decisive in resolving leadership conflicts; they also ventilated policy alternatives, and sometimes disagreements. In the last years of communist rule, the elite sought increasingly to transform their positions of political power into the more enduring advantage of property, and this allowed many of them to maintain their elite status into the post‐communist period. As well as printed sources, the study draws on recently opened party ARCHIVES and about a hundred interviews with members of the Brezhnev‐era Central Committee.

The article presents a historical examination of the role played by Andean notaries in preserving the history of Spanish colonial South American through their recording of public records and translation of texts between the Spanish and Quechua languages. It explores the chronology of the spread of Spanish language knowledge amongst the Andeans during the late 1500s and early 1600s, describes the role played by Peru viceroy Francisco de Toledo and author Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala in advocating for literacy education for indigenous peoples in the region, and comments on the development of an ARCHIVES of Andean writings, called the escribanos de cabildo.

On November 8, 1930, Gérard Fleury, an amateur cinematographer in Normandy, went out at dawn to film Lake Thuit. He was never seen or heard from again. On August 20, 1940, Barcelona-born Stalinist Ramón Mercader assassinated Leon Trotsky in Mexico. After spending 20 years in prison, he was buried in Russia under a tombstone marked Ramón Ivanovich López. Fleury and Mercader are "uncanny" protagonists of two fascinating Spanish documentaries that explore transnational identity. Functioning as database narratives whose search engines generate a unique network of stories, they excavate lost histories that could potentially change our understanding of the transnational 1990s.

The article focuses on the accomplishments of InPhase Technologies which demonstrated the highest data density of any commercial technology by recording 515 gigabits of data per square inch. Holographic data takes advantage of volumetric storage capabilities rather than recording only on the surface of the material. Information technology professionals required more data storage in their data ARCHIVES. Holographic technology offers a potential alternative to technologies for archival storage requirements.

The Greek collection of Matenadaran contains a particular series of old flyleaves that were removed from the bindings and kept in envelopes. In this series missing two fragments, in 1957, Kurt Treu found one page excerpt from Book VI of Constitutiones Apostolorum. In 2004, examination of one of the two fragments, now both rediscovered, reveals a second excerpt from Book IV of Constitutiones Apostolorum. This excerpt is written in the same hand and comes from the same manuscript, and is apparently not directly linked to any previously known witness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article narrates the author's experience in his professional involvement with ARCHIVES. Throughout his professional life, the issue of identity seems always to have been there somewhere in the background, a kind of ringing in the ear that could only be noticed when it is stopped thinking about anything else. Many of the people for whom he first worked had themselves been the ones to make the break from the library fold, to run for the fence and jump.

Highlights the Alan Garner Day held by the Bodleian Library to mark its receipt of the papers of one the country's most well-known contemporary authors in Oxford, England. Reasons behind the strong readership of Garner's modern classics among both the presently and the formerly young; Significance of having his papers come to an institution that already has an international reputation for its collections of writings for children; Release of Garner's most recent novel "Thursbitch" which testifies to the inspiration he draws from landscape and history.

In 2009, the Baystate Health Sciences Library began to investigate digitizing historical ARCHIVES as an innovative way to expand its usefulness to its institution and the communities that it serves. This pilot project was to capture, manage, and preserve annual reports and School of Nursing memorabilia. Across the nation, other medical libraries were launching their own projects. This article describes the process in the context of other digitization projects at medical libraries. Issues of selection, goals, and challenges are addressed. Digitizing hospital history is a viable opportunity for librarians willing to learn new skills and forge new alliances.
