摘      要:The historical development of race and religious pluralism in Jamaica since slavery reveals an enduring distinction between European and Afro-Christian traditions. The twentieth-century introduction of the heterogeneous US-related Church of God, the Pentecostals and the Seventh Day Adventists has been further supplemented since independence in 1962 by a new, secular world-view within the violent garrisons of Kingston - about a quarter of the city s population. Secularism in Kingston has tempted the materialistic but necessitous urban poor into the embrace of dons (gunmen), who offer their own version of citizenship in the shape of differential incorporationde facto.
