摘      要:This article focuses on the historian author s efforts to trace consequences of a woman s application to travel to Australia in 1958. Like a few other Papuans and New Guineans in the 1950s Tessie Lavau of lokea village in Kerema district of Papua visited Australia as a nursemaid with her Australian employers when they took a vacation down South. Personal relations must have been cordial, they kept in touch when she left their service to become a typist in public service and they offered to find her accommodation if she chose to revisit Australia. In 1958 she accepted their proposal and lodged her application to travel. That very ordinary action forced Australian officials on either side of Torres Strait to reconsider relationships between Territory of Papua and New Guinea and the government and people of Australia.
